Before we start… What is a podcast? What do we need to make/listen to them? How can a student use them? How can the teacher use them? What is iTunes? Is it useful to us in podcasting?

Why are they so relevant to language teaching? Focus on speaking/listening Portable ( add them to your iPod, phone etc) talk about terms such as ubiquitous/pervasive Regular Lots of subjects ( interests of students) Authentic or made for language learning Life long learning Own time, ( play back as many times as you want) Learning outside the class Abundance of material ( think about 10 years ago) Linked to Krashen’s idea of input Linked to ideas of immersion
5
Problems Can’t properly search them ( metatags) Information overload If teacher podcasts lecture then why bother to come to class Copyright Can’t be skimmed for suitability Technical issues
6
Examples of consuming for students Listen to specific language podcast ( French Challenge, lists of vocabulary for Chinese) Listen to the news in English ( Easy Radio) Listen to favourite journalist, writer, grammarian Listen to updates on specific topic of interest (Spanish travel programme) Can you think of more?
