Trials of Life: Growing UP The video is best viewed from Tinbergen’s four questions – Mechanism: Consider some of the mechanisms involved in growing up – Phylogenetic: Not directly covered in this video – Ontogenetic: This is the main focus of the video – Survival Value: This is also a main focus of the video, what adaptations offspring, parents, and helpers have the promote the development of offspring

List of Topics to Keep in Mind 1.How does natural selection enter into “growing up”? Keep track of the numerous examples. 2.Consider the Umwelten of each of the animal systems you observe, consider both adult parental, and the developing offspring, and how Umwelten change. 3.What types of social interactions did you observe? What were their functions? 4.Observe the different systems of parental care and how these are related to ecological circumstances and the development of offspring. 5.Consider the different types of parent-offspring and offspring-offspring interactions and their functions. 6.Note different patterns of behavior and social interactions in the different animal systems you observe. 7.There are many examples of communication among offspring and parents. What types of communication do you observe? 8.How does the assessment/management model of communication apply parent-offspring communication? 9.Social learning is important. Are there any examples of intergenerational transmission of information via social learning?

Capuchin Monkeys A series of videos on the social behavior of Capuchin monkeys, how they transmit information that we call culture in humans, their ability learn, and to share. Although not all the questions for the previous video apply, keep in mind especially questions 12 and 13. Part 1 Part 2 Crafty Capuchins Do Capuchins perceive fairness?
