Explore and examine the legal requirements and regulations for ensuring the health, safety and security of those employed in business. To classify and explain the various acts of legislation covering health, safety and security of people working in a business environment.

5 To secure the health, safety and welfare of a person at work
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 for the workplace to ensure that the premises, plant and machinery do not endanger the people using them. To secure the health, safety and welfare of a person at work Protecting people that are not just in work from the activities of the work place Controlling the keeping and use of explosive or highly flammable/dangerous substances, and preventing the unlawful acquisition, possession and use of such substances. Controlling the emission into the atmosphere of noxious or offensive substances (Environmental Protection Act 1990) it is the duty of every employee while at work to take reasonable care of him or herself and of any other person who may be affected by his or her actions

7 ACTIVITY 1 In pairs, discuss the following questions:
Why do you think we need health and safety protection in the workplace? What might happen if there was no legislation to protect workers from harm?

8 ACTIVITY 2 Select a business you are familiar with and identify as many potential hazards in this workplace as you can. For each hazard you have identified, suggest a measure that would protect employees from harm. In groups as allocated prepare a poster on your selected business as outlined previously.

9 ACTIVITY 2 Continued Extension Task Explore the Health and Safety Executive Website Write a bit about the guidelines your selected business would follow inline with HSE*. *HSE – HEALTH AND SAFETY EXECUTIVE
