1 A SHORT PRESENTATION OF KAARINA OPEN COLLEGE The whole country is covered by Open Colleges or Adult Education centres. The institutes are subsidized by the state and usually owned by the towns or municipalities. Originally when founded a little over one hundred years ago these institutes were called workers' institutes. KAARINA

5 The children's department is growing most of all. There is a big need of volunteer art education for children outside ordinary school time. There are 700 children studying in the children's department. There is a Pre-music school for children 3-6 years and still other music education for children. At the Arts department education is given at some classes also in English. At this age children still learn easily foreign languages. Art school Acrobatics school.

7 Handicraft classes are very popular and form about 25 % of the curriculum. The world is getting more and more virtual. Therefore people have a big need to do something concrete. Soon there will be in the industry a lack of people able to do something real. For instance virtual clothes don't warm anyone in winter time. Some examples of popular subjects: pottery, glass blowing, furniture restore, woodwork, metal work, dress making, textile printing, felting, weaving. Languages have always been an important part of the education plan. Light-weight vehicles Weaving

8 Information Technology is growing most rapidly of all. There is a possibility to do an exam and getting a "licence" for using IT. There is a big need for all basic courses as word processing, spreadsheet computation, presentation graphics, using internet etc. Computer education at Tietostudio
