2 The Urinary Bladder It is a reservoir for urine
Holds more than a pint of fluid Lies behind the pubic bone Protected by the pelvis Bladder wall made up of muscle and an inner lining Collects and stores urine until can be expelled from the body Connected to the two ureters that carry urine to it Bladder is five inches long and three inches wide

4 The Kidneys One quarter of blood output by the heart is sent to the kidneys to be purified There are two kidneys Receives one-hundred and twenty pints of blood per hour Are the “balancers of internal fluids” Levels out the body fluids You need to drink lots of water to keep kidneys in good shape Connected to and gives urine to the ureters. Eleven to fourteen inches long

6 The Ureters There are two ureters
Carries urine from the kidneys to the bladder Ten to twelve inches long Urine flows down by gravity and contractions that pass through muscle layers of the ureters Each ureter enters the bladder through a tunnel in it

8 The Urethra Tube that conveys urine from the urinary bladder to the outside of the body Wall is lined with mucous membranes Contains a thick layer of smooth muscle tissue Contains several mucous glands, called urethral glands that secrete mucus into the urethral canal Four centimeters long Opening is located above the vaginal opening and about two and a half centimeters below the clitorus
