The project in practice 1. 1.Establishing baseline data on the competency levels of all students in reading and writing. 2. 2.Monitoring progress of these students in reading and writing at the end of Year 1 and at Years 4, 6, 8 and 10 during the period of the project.

The project in practice 3. 3.Establishing baseline data on existing ‘social capital’ within the Otumoetai Learning Community Schools. 4. 4.Strengthen co-operation between the staff of the different schools in the improvement of reading and writing ability of their students. 5. 5.Monitoring progress in social capital gains.

The project in practice 6. 6.Identifying and disseminating good practice strategies in the teaching of reading and writing. 7. 7.Producing profiles of the Otumoetai student as a reader.

Underlying principles 1.As much as possible will be done in normal working hours through time release (90% of budget). 2.Sharing and learning from each-other. 3.Seeking excellence whilst valuing diversity.
