Definition Social networking services can be broadly defined as Internet- or mobile-device-based social spaces designed to facilitate communication, collaboration and content sharing across networks of contacts.

65% of Online Adults Use Social Networking Sites Surveys show in February 2005, just 8% of internet users -- or 5% of all adults -- said they used Social Networking sites like Facebook. Now 65% say they use a social networking sites like MySpace or Facebook --up from 61% one year ago. That means half of all adults (50%) use social networking sites. Social networking sites are most popular with women, young adults under age 30. Young adult women ages 18-29 are the power users of social networking; fully 89% of those who are online use the sites overall and 69% do so on an average day.

Age Requirements?? Two and a half million children aged between 8 and 17 have created profiles on social networking sites, according to research. But parents fail to realize that poor security means that about four in ten personal pages are open for anyone to look at. Although the three main social networks, Bebo, Facebook and MySpace, claim to have a minimum age limit of 13 or 14, a quarter of all children with internet access and aged between 8 and 11 say that they have a page on a social networking site, according to the communications regulator, Ofcom.
