11 Answer the following questions: 1. Is Tangsa a city or a village?In what part of India is Tangsa? Tangsa is a village and it is in northern India.

12 2. What happened to the hills and soil around Tangsa many years ago. There were no trees in or around the village.When it rained, the soil was carried away down the hills and into the rivers.

13 3. Why did this happen there? Trees were cut down but none were planted.

14 4.What did the people in Tangsa do after that? They began to save or protect their trees..

15 5.What did some strangers want to do in 1970? They wanted to cut down a large forest.

16 6. Why did the village people not allow them to do that? They knew they had to save the trees.If not, they would have no wood at all.

17 7. What was the forest programme in that area? 1). Meetings are held in order to explain the programme to the villageers. 2).It is operated by the women.

18 3). Twice a year, large teams of women plant thousands of trees. 4). The small trees are given to the villagers for free. 5).The village women water the trees. 6).They should also make sure that the cows don not knock them down.

19 8. What rules do the villagers have to obey? People are not allowed to cut down trees when they are still small. They are only allowed to cut down trees when they are big enough.

20 9. What does Tangsa look like now? The forests have grown,larger and better.
