2 SOLIDARITY in POLAND  In the 1970s & 1980s, ANTI-COMMUNIST revolutions began with the Workers’ Defense Committee, which used strikes and “lock-ins” to gain attention and support from the international community  Led by an electrician named LECH WALESA

3  1980 – workers were given the official right to CREATE UNIONS. A national labor party, called SOLIDARITY, was formed with a membership of 10 million! (almost Poland’s entire labor force!)  1981 – Martial law (military law enforcement) was put into place in Poland by order of the SOVIETS  1990 – Free elections were held and LECH WALESA was elected PRESIDENT

4 BHOPAL, India  Because of increasingly strict American laws, many large CHEMICAL MANUFACTURERS looked elsewhere to set up their factories. Many ended up in 3rd World Nations  UNION CARBIDE built a PESTICIDE chemical plant in BHOPAL, INDIA  December 3, 1984 – a cloud of gas (containing 45 tons of a deadly concentrated pesticide ingredient) leaked out of a high pressure storage tank

5  Before the cloud scattered, 2,500 were KILLED and over 200,000 were injured (many injuries were long- term… blindness, sterility, kidney disease, liver infection, and brain damage)  Union Carbide was forced to pay $470 MILLION in COMPENSATION in 1989

6 CHERNOBYL  Chernobyl, USSR was the site of a major NUCLEAR POWER PLANT  April 26, 1986, an EXPLOSION at the plant led to RADIOACTIVE CONTAMINATION of the surrounding area

7  It is regarded as the WORST NUCLEAR POWER ACCIDENT IN HISTORY  Over 330,000 people were evacuated and resettled

8 STAR WARS (no, not the movie)  REAGAN built his career as a firm ANTI- COMMUNIST  Reagan INCREASED DEFENSE SPENDING dramatically in the 1980s and ordered the Marines into:  (1982) – LEBANON as peacekeepers [oversee the withdrawal of the Palestinian Liberation Organization (PLO)]

9  (1983) – GRENADA (island allied with Fidel Castro/Communist Cuba)  SDI (Strategic Defense Initiative) – idea was to create a shield against incoming ICBMs (missiles) by attacking & destroying them with an orbiting weapons system called “Star Wars” by critics

10 TIANANMEN SQUARE  1989 – STUDENTS in CHINA PROTESTED their LACK OF RIGHTS  An ARMY moved in with TANKS after the crowd in Tiananmen Square refused to disperse

11  Some army units actually joined the protestors  More than 1,000 were killed when the various army units opened fire on each other (students were caught in the crossfire)
