20 BRINGING JESUS TO OUR WORLD
“The Key Areas of Discipleship” Luke 9:51-62 Pastor Groover April 25, 2010

21 INTRODUCTION: Jesus shows us, in this passage, the key areas of discipleship that lay the groundwork for an effective ministry to the world.

22 DISCIPLES OF JESUS MUST:
ENDURE REJECTION.

23 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem.

24 And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, “Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?” But he turned and rebuked them. And they went on to another village. Luke 9:51-56 (ESV)

25 DISCIPLES OF JESUS MUST: ELIMINATE SELF-CONFIDENCE.
ELIMINATE SELF-CONFIDENCE.

26 As they were going along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes, and birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” Luke 9:57-58 (ESV)

27 DISCIPLES OF JESUS MUST:
AVOID EXCUSES.

28 To another he said, “Follow me
To another he said, “Follow me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go and bury my father.” And Jesus said to him, “Leave the dead to bury their own dead. But as for you, go and proclaim the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:59-60 (ESV)

29 DISCIPLES OF JESUS MUST: TURN FROM DOUBLE-MINDEDNESS.
TURN FROM DOUBLE-MINDEDNESS.

30 Yet another said, “I will follow you, Lord, but let me first say farewell to those at my home.” Jesus said to him, “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God.” Luke 9:61-62 (ESV)

31 CONCLUSION:

32 Where can disciples find this great strength?
Enduring rejection, eliminating self-confidence, avoiding excuses, and turning from double-mindedness to be a disciple takes great strength. Where can disciples find this great strength? Disciples of Jesus look to him for strength. For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me strength. Philippians 4:13 (NLT)

33 What Jesus taught His disciples and the multitudes appeared to have had done them little good. They lacked power, love, and discipline, and they grieved His heart.

34 If we lack these spiritual essentials today, we can never truly be His disciples, but they are available to us from the Lord. “For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but of power, of love and of self-discipline” 2 Timothy 1:7 (NIV)

35 Are we a joy to Jesus Christ, or are we breaking His heart?

36 All to Jesus, I surrender; All to Him I freely give; I will ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live. I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, my blessèd Savior, I surrender all. 275 “I Surrender All”

37 All to Jesus, I surrender; Make me, Savior, wholly Thine; Let me feel thy Holy Spirit, Truly know that Thou art mine. I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, my blessèd Savior, I surrender all. “I Surrender All”

38 All to Jesus, I surrender; Lord, I give myself to Thee; Fill me with Thy love and power; Let Thy blessing fall on me. I surrender all, I surrender all, All to Thee, my blessèd Savior, I surrender all. “I Surrender All”
