Effects of Colonialism in Africa Genocide When was this term created? The systematic extermination of a group of people on the basis of a defining characteristic. Term was created after the Holocaust in 1948. Used so the world can identify and stop horrific acts

Effects of Colonialism in Africa Examples of genocide -killing members of the group -causing serious bodily or mental harm -creating living conditions to destroy -imposing measures to prevent the birth -forcibly transferring children of the group to another group

Effects of Colonialism in Africa Refugee 33 million Someone who has left their country because of political or environmental reasons and have crossed an international border. The number of “refugees” in the world.

Effects of Colonialism in Africa Internally Displaced Person (IDP) What type of protection do each receive? Someone that has been forced to move like a refugee but has stayed within the country. Refugees are protected by international law, but IDP’s are under the protection of local authorities.

Effects of Colonialism in Africa What are the consequences? Malnutrition Water Disease –Most of which are curable such as the measles Rape –Used as a weapon of war and ethnic cleansing IDP Women in India and Central African Republic
