Do Now: Company Towns Directions: Consider the following scenario. On a separate sheet of paper answer the following questions. You are a new immigrant to Chicago. There are very few houses that you can afford and the city is dirty and crime-ridden. Your employer has offered you an opportunity to work in a factory located in a nearby town. Everyone in the town would work for the same company and rent their house from the owner. He promises that you’ll have a clean, safe place to live as long as you are an employee in his company. 1. What issues would you have about moving to a town entirely owned by your boss? 2. What are the possible negatives to moving there? 3. What are the possible positives? 4. Would it make a difference if this company had a reputation of paying its good workers a very high wage?

Company Towns Many immigrants and people living in tenements moved to company towns to escape the crowded living conditions of the cities. In partners, look at the images on your worksheet and the quotes about life in the Pullman Town and answer the corresponding questions.

Company Town Debate Using what you have learned in class, as well as the readings and information from today’s class, write a list of pros and cons about company towns (living in them, working in them). Share with your neighbor and compile a list with all of your pros and cons combined. Be prepared to debate your pros and cons.

Debate What would it be worth to you, both in money and lack of personal freedom, to move your family out of the slums and into a safe and clean neighborhood?
