2 Making a Living  Harsh climate Economies were based on more than just farming –Land and Sea  Farming Too hilly, rocky – hard to plow Short growing season –Subsistence Farming  Producing only enough food for one family

3 Making a Living  Harvesting the Sea Fishing – caught lots of fish Export – selling products elsewhere –What types of products does the US export? 1. 2. Import – buying good from other places –What types of products does the US import? 1. 2. Whaling –Oil for lamps –Spermaceti for candle making

4 Making a Living  Living From the Forest Hunted food from the forests –Deer, squirrels, turkeys Shipbuilding  Business and Trade Artisans – craft workers and laborers –Carpenters, coopers, sailors

5 Making a Living  Women in the Economy Worked along side their husbands on farms Opened shops Made cloth, candles, soap, furniture  Triangular Trade Routes Boston to West Indies - Fish, grain, meat, lumber West Indies to Boston - Sugar, fruit – made rum Boston to West Africa – Rum West Africa to West Indies - Slaves

6 A Belief in Education  Dame Schools Women taught alphabet, reading, Bible verses Hornbook instead of books New England Primer, 1 st schoolbook published  The First Public Schools Massachusetts School Law –Towns must hire a teacher to teach reading and writing Harvard –First university in the colonies

7 Community Life  The Town Two rows of houses facing each other –Green or common in the middle  Cattle and sheep roamed here  Social center of town –Saltbox houses  Family Life Family was important Kids played with jacks, marbles and hide-and-seek

8 Community Life  Observing the Sabbath Sunday – no work to be done Meet at the meetinghouse –Men and women were separated Tithingman –Kept people awake in church –Tickled/ knocked on the head

9 Community Life  Town Meetings Free men could vote 1 st – only landowning church goers Later – all white male property owners Selectmen – town leaders who made decisions
