Four Major Branches of Science Geology Oceanography Meteorology Astronomy
4
Four Minor Branches of Science Environmental Science Ecology Geochemistry Geography and Cartography
5
Geology- The Science that Rocks Geology-the study of the origin, history, structure of Earth and the Earth and the process that shape the Earth Three types of geologists are a volcanologist, seismologist, and paleontologist
6
Oceanography Oceanography-the scientific study of the sea Four areas of oceanography are physical, biological, geological, and chemical. Some things oceanographers have found are black smokers, blood-red tubes worms, clams, and blind white crabs.
7
Meteorology Meteorology-the scientific study of the Earth’s atmosphere especially in relation to weather and climate Weather forecasting is an example of meteorology. Two examples of meteorology is tornadoes, and hurricanes
8
Astronomy Astronomy-the study of the universe Astronomers study stars, asteroids, planets, other things in space by using a optical telescope made by Galileo Astronomers study most of the time stars, and the closest star to us is the sun.
9
Environmental Science Environmental science-the study of how humans interact with the environment One example of a task an environmental scientist does is to determine how humans affect the environment Environmental science depends on geology, life science, chemistry, and physics.
10
Ecology Ecology- a community of organisms and their nonliving environment An ecologist’s job is to study the relationships between organisms and their surroundings They work in many fields, such as wildlife management, agriculture, forestry, and conservations.
11
Geochemistry Geochemistry- study of both geology and chemistry Geochemists specialize in the chemistry of rocks, minerals, and soil Geochemists can determine the economic value of materials, what the environment was like when the first rocks were formed, and study the distribution and effect of chemicals added to the environment by human activity.
12
Geography and Cartography Physical geographers- study the surface features of Earth Cartographers- make maps of those features by using aerial and satellite photos, and computer mapping systems Together both physical geographers, and cartographers make maps.
