7 Credit System The Finnish credit system complies with the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) so that the Finnish credits are equivalent to the ECTS credits. Higher education studies are measured in credits (cr). 1 credit = 27 hrs. student work A student’s average study effort of 1,600 hours required for the completion of studies during one academic year corresponds to 60 credits.

9 Forms of study work Lecture attendance/ contact teaching Group work/ projects -> active participation required Laboratory work Independent study work: essays, reports, book exams etc. -> always consult the teacher about the requirements!

10 Exam forms and guidelines - Different types of exams: written ( short questions, essay questions, alternative answers) or oral. - assesment event is a supervised event - be prepared to prove your indentity - the equipment and material to be used are determined by the supervisor - retake possible (failed grade can be improved twice and passed grade once during the following two terms) - N.B! Students that have enrolled for the assessment event and fail to turn up, will be considered to have attended the event.

11 - Loss of face and credibility - Leads to failed course and a possible warning or suspension

12 Bachelor’s Thesis -15 cr. (assessed 1-5) -requires a written maturity test -Bachelor’s theses are (mainly) public -for more detailed instructions, please contact your school Practical Training - 20- 50 cr. - intergral part of the studies - in Finland or abroad - great opportunity, but requires also responsibility

13 Student – Lecturer – Teaching - informal & polite environment - interactive teaching -> active participation is expected, questions & discussions are welcome - variety of options, freedom to choose part of the studies - co-operation, negotiation & flexibility (when credibility and responsibility are in order)

Much of the study information and announcements from the teachers will be sent in via e-mail. - Do feel free and remember to ask -You may influence your studies via Student Union - Interested, independent, self-directed and interactive: some key words for the study career
