2. The adjourned situation of unemployment in Italy On 1 April 2011, the Istat has diffused data on the employment of the Italian population. In particular, worrying signs come from the data on youth unemployment, which reached record levels and it has marked a steady increase in the recent months. In February 2011, the employed were 22.814.000 units, with an increase of 0,1% (17,000 units) over than January 2011. In comparison with the previous year, employment declined by 0.3% (-65.000 units). The decrease concerns only the male component.

3. The employment rate is equal to 56.7%, unchanged from January and down 0,3 points compared to February 2010. The number of unemployed amounted to 2.088.000, with a decrease of 2% (-43.000) than in January. Both the male and the female were down. On an annual basis the decrease in the number of unemployed is 1% (-21.000).

4. The unemployment rate is now at 8,4%, a decrease of 0.2 percentage points compared to January and 0.1 points year on year. The youth unemployment rate falls to 28.1% with a cyclical decline of 1.3 percentage points. Inactive people aged 15 to 64 years increased by 0.1% (21,000 units) compared to the previous month. The rate of inactivity, after growth of the previous three months, remains stable at 38%.
