6. “The Holy Roman Empire” The Holy Roman Empire has nothing to do with the Roman Empire. It refers to the unification in the 800s of Charlemagne's conquests with the Roman Church, creating a religious- political entity entitled “the Holy Roman Empire”. The Holy Roman Empire covered parts of Germany and France as well as Italy. An easy way to remember the difference is that the Holy Roman Empire was run by descendants of the barbarians, and it ushered in the beginning of the medieval period. It's very much different from the Roman Empire, which belongs to the classical period.
