Fan Blade Analysis By Andrew Hinthorn

Background Model an aluminum fan blade in Pro/E Conduct stress analysis on the blade using Visual Nastran

Problem Formulation The rivets were replace in Nastran with rigid joints An angular velocity of 600 rev./min. was applied to the blade using a revolute motor.

Mesh Each of the four blades had 5378 elements The center section had 30983 elements Used H-adaptivity with a 10% error

Animation

Results The stress on the blade were in the right order of magnitude Theoretically the stress on the four blades should have been symmetric The stress were two orders of magnitude below the yield strength

Symmetric Results The fan blade was cut into 4 sections Constraints were applied perpendicular to the cut There was a stress concentration that caused the results to appear different
