Dr. Chen, Management Information Systems 1-17 Why choose IS as a major/concentration? “Would I advise a student to become an IS major? It depends on what you want to do. I believe it’s one of the best degrees because it’s so broad-based. It sets you up for about any career in business.” “You can start as a technical person, and later move into another part of the business. Unlike accounting or finance, where it’s rare to leave your discipline. IS professionals can move among business disciplines. You might work in finance on one project and marketing on the next. Granted is not as simple as saying, ‘OK, today I want to work on a brand-marketing campaign.’ but the background in MIS allows for choice and flexibility. Three, four, or five years out you might discover that you really want to specialize in supply chain operations. If so, your knowledge of IS and your broadly based business background will open that door and set you up to succeed.” By Kevin Hamilton
