3 plantation A large farm where crops like cotton or tobacco are grown by people who live there The slaves worked long hours in the cotton fields on the plantation.

4 big house The large mansion where the plantation master & his family lived. “Mama worked in the big house and papa worked in the fields… The master set us free in…1832.”

5 Drinking Gourd/Big Dipper A cluster (constellation) of seven stars that look like a ladle or cup with a long handle “We’ll follow the drinking gourd,” Papa answered. He pointed to the glittery sky, and I saw he meant the Big Dipper…Papa loved stars.”

6 weary Very tired I was weary after walking all day, mile after mile, on my own tired feet.

7 sturdy Well-built, very strong, not easily broken Papa built a sturdy cabin to last us a lifetime.

8 fretted worried We waited all day for Papa to come back, and fretted as we looked out the window.

9 settlement A small village or group of houses We had homes, a church, a store, a stable, and a mill in our settlement.

10 stable A building where tame animals, like horses, are kept We brought the horses into the stable at night to keep them safe and warm.

11 celebrate To observe or honor a special day or event with ceremonies or other activities We celebrated the 4 th of July with a big parade.
