The Fire of ‘22 Exhibit Exhibit will give visitors a deeper understanding of the gravity of what happened to the City of New Bern on December 1 st, 1922 A combination of graphic images and text will outline what happened in just a few hours. Selected images will heighten the overall experience; they are both profound and provocative.

Storyline A series of vignettes will take the visitor through the day’s events in sequential order, starting with the sendoff at the train station at 7:30 in the morning.

Train Sendoff Recreated ad from local newspaper about train ride to Raleigh to watch the New Bern High School Football team play in the Eastern Regional Championship against Sanford.

Train Station Dimensional cut out of a train car with silhouettes of passengers. Visitors will hear a train whistle and get a sense of the excitement the town was feeling that day.

Child-size fire truck Kids can ride on fire engine and use section of real hose and pretend to put out fires.

1 st Floor - Welcome Downstairs features the following: Fred the Fire Horse (who becomes an iconic image throughout Museum, especially in Children’s Area) Seven historic engines and/or wagons Large graphic panel with image and information about each engine at each engine location Sponsorship opportunity available

The Ella Bengel Firetruck Hands-on activity for children available Board the Ella Bengel firetruck and pretend like you’re en- route to a real fire. Ring the bell and turn the steering wheel Real video footage supplied by the New Bern Fire Department is shown on a monitor mounted outside the windshield. There will be a few videos of NBFD firefighters answering a call, so kids will feel like they’re really in the driver’s seat.

The Ella Bengel Firetruck SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITY for the boarding area. Plans have been submitted for construction; looking for donation of time and/or materials for actual build. Recognition featured as a graphic panel permanently mounted to the platform. PHOTO OPPORTUNITY Get a picture of your child in the driver’s seat. Firemen uniforms will be on hand nearby, so kids can put them on before boarding.

Fabric banners – Sponsorship Opportunity Hanging from the ceiling will feature a minimum of FOUR hanging fabric banners (double-sided) that highlight “clips” of New Bern firefighting history. Banners will be 5 ½ feet tall and 2 feet wide, a substantial visual space, for visitors to recognize
