Learning Targets, Evidence and Assessment

Good Learning Targets state clearly what it is that you consider to be crucial in a lesson or, at a higher level, in a unit; focus on central facts, concepts, skills and dispositions; are articulated within and across grades; fall within the teacher’s repertoire; and are manageable. –e.g., rather than “ Students will appreciate literature.”

Good Learning Targets consider: “Students will understand the role of imagery in Carl Sandburg’s ‘Grass’” Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and Waterloo Shovel them under and let me work- I am the grass; I cover all. And pile them high at Gettysburg And pile them high at Ypres and Verdun. Shovel them under and let me work. Two years, ten years, and passengers ask the conductor: What place is this? Where are we now? I am the grass. Let me work.

Learning Targets: Fact Students will know…. the definition of enthalpy: [ heat content ] twelve important dates for WWI: –June 28, 1914 - Archduke Ferdinand, is assassinated in Sarajevo,..., – June 28, 1919 - Peace Treaty signed in Versailles. an isosceles triangle has 2 sides of equal length. the definition of a pun: [ the humorous use of a word in such a way as to suggest different meanings or applications.] evidence: state the definition of a pun. assessment: selected response - matching test.
