What is Leadership? – To lead is a process – Leaders need followers – Leader needs to use their skills to motivate people to action – The group must have a common goal – You must do it for the right reasons

Leaders take the initiative. They do things, get involved, make things happen. They volunteer, have ideas, are willing to step up to extra responsibility when required. They understand the bigger picture, and Think things through before jumping in

Why do we need leaders now? Period of rapid change Risk of being left behind Have to accept that doing the same old thing isn’t enough Flexibility and innovation Opportunities to make a significant difference to our communities need to be grasped Small and large opportunities out there

What is CPD? Not just big time consuming things Focus on what you need to develop through self knowledge and knowledge of what is going on Do something every day Reflect on what you learn Have a plan: use a structure, but be open

CPD for leaders Know yourself Understand how people and groups work Develop relevant skills and experience Know what is happening in the big picture Opportunities

Know yourself = be strong – Self awareness – Self control – Self esteem – Realistic assessment of skills and abilities
