ICP Integrated Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems - ICP IM Activities & Priorities Lars Lundin, chairman
2
Monitor state and changes with causative explanations Develop and validate models Detect changes by biomonitoring Ecosystem investigation Cause-effect approach Cross-media flux approach ICP Integrated Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems
3
The Integrated IM Catchment approach Budget calculations Process oriented
4
IM catchment with focus on soil and vegetation Soil physical and chemical characteristics determined for the soils Included also in the EC BioSoil project (SE IM) Repeated determinations of soil chemistry Potential respiration determined
5
TF 15 countries Data 17 countries 4 missing 50 sites 43 active The Integrated Monitoring sites
6
Four Swedish IM sites; Gårdsjön, Aneboda, Kindla, Gammtratten Further research sites but not with as comprehensive programme; Meteorology, Air chemistry, precipitation chemistry, throughfall, algae, epiphytes, foliage and litterfall chemistry, forest, tree biomass, ground vegetation, microbial decomposition, soil chemistry, soil water, groundwater and runoff chemistry.
7
ICP Integrated Monitoring of Air Pollution Effects on Ecosystems IM Task Force meetings annually Workshop Task Force52 participants Excursion15 countries
8
Maintaining IM site activities Harmonisation of the network Network improvements Updating the database Annual report Task Force Co-operation with other ICPs Continuing scientific work IM programme
9
Priorities Heavy metals Dynamic modelling Nitrogen loads and effects Ground vegetation indicator modelling Budgets and trends in S, N, H and BC Air Pollution and climate interactions
10
Reports prepared ICP IM 16th Annual Report 2007 Update on heavy metals Nitrogen fluxes and C/N interactions AMAP - Acidification in the Arctic Chemical and biological responses presented separately
11
Heavy metal flows in IM sites Soil humus layer Pb and Cd decrease but Hg not
12
Cumulative N deposition versus C/N ratio in soil
13
The IM sites are suitable for the development of the SoilCritZone project IM sites contribute to soil monitoring development; It provides; Data to develop model for soil life cycle analysis Promote soil sustainability in Europe Underpin thematic soil strategy for a European Soil directive
