T HE U NIVERSITY OF G EORGIA U.S. Constitution signer, Abraham Baldwin, wrote UGA charter (plan) Georgia’s General Assembly approved UGA charter in 1785 Federal government donated land on which to build First public university to be established in America Baldwin was president of UGA between 1785-1801 (existed only on paper during this time) 1801> opened for classes 1806> first permanent building, “Franklin College”

T HE UNIVERSITY OF G EORGIA Began with financial problems but over the next 130 years as important political and business leaders graduated from UGA After the Civil War, its size and reputation greatly expanded Although UGA existed first (on paper), University of North Carolina held classes first Today the 2 schools have a rivalry over who was the first true university in America

W OMEN A ND A FRICAN -A MERICANS AT UGA Video: Women were not admitted as full-academic students until 1919. Newspaper:African-Americans were not admitted to UGA until 1961.

S.A.L.M.AS.A.L.M.AS.A.L.M.AS.A.L.M.A Louisville was Georgia 3 rd state capital (1796-1807) after Savannah and Augusta Louisville was named after King Louis XVI (16th) in honor of France’s support during the American Revolution As Georgians expanded their land west, the state capital followed them to be in a central location to the people Capital failed due to malaria outbreaks and Ogeechee River being difficult to navigate for trade Louisville Market House sold produce, machinery, and slaves (SALMA) = S avannah, A ugusta, L ouisville, M illedgeville, A tlanta Georgia’s 5 Capitals

S PREAD OF M ETHODIST AND B APTIST CHURCHES John Wesley, founder of the Methodist church, arrived with Oglethorpe Second Great Awakening (1790-1830) saw large numbers of Georgians identify themselves as Baptist and Methodist Mission work by these churches converted slaves on plantations Farmers and townspeople held revivals and camp meetings to increase members After a harvest, revivals allowed people to hear sermons and socialize Circuit riders were ministers who rode from town to town preaching and converting people to Baptist and Methodist faiths The nickname “the Bible Belt” came from this time
