H. Muscles that move the foot and toes 1. Anterior compartment a. Tibialis anterior- dorsiflexes and inverts foot 1. Originates from lateral condyle of body of tibia 2. Inserts at 1 metatarsal and 1 cuneiform

b. extensor digitorum longus- dorsiflexes and everts foot and extends toes. 1. Originates from lateral condyle of tibia and anterior of fibula 2. Inserts at middle and distal phalanges of outer 4 toes

2. Lateral compartment a. Peroneus longus- plantar flexes and everts foot 1. Originates from head and body of fibula and lateral condyle of tibia 2. Inserts at 1 metatarsal and 1 cuneiforms b. Peroneus brevis- plantar flexes and everts foot 1. Originates at body of fibula 2. Inserts at 5 metatarsal

3. Posterior compartment a. Superficial 1. Gastrocnemius- plantar flexes foot and everts leg a. Origin is lateral and medial condyles of femur b. Inserts at calcaneus by calcaneal (achilles) tendon 2. Plantaris- plantar flexes foot a. Origin is femur above lateral condyle b. Inserts at calcaneus by calcaneal tendon

b. Deep 1. Flexor digitorum longus- plantar flexes and inverts foot, and flexes toes a. Origin is posterior surface of the tibia b. Insert at distal phalanges of outer toes 2. Tibialis posterior- plantar flex and inverts foot a. Origin is tibia an fibula b. Insert at 2-4 metatarsals, 3 cuneiforms and cuboidal
