MUSCLES OF THE LEG
2
MUSCLES OF THE POSTERIOR LEG
Gastrocnemius: two bellies Soleus: deep to gastroc, but wider Plantaris: absent in approx. 10% of people Popliteus: deepest muscle of posterior knee Tibialis posterior Flexor digitorum longus Flexor hallucis longus
3
GASTROCNEMIUS O- (posterior) condyles of the femur
I- Calcaneus via Achilles tendon A- Plantar flexes foot Plantar flexion
4
GASTROCNEMIUS
5
SOLEUS O-Upper fibula & tibia I- Calcaneus via Achilles tendon
A- Plantar flexes foot
6
SOLEUS
7
PLANTARIS O- Above lateral head of gastrocnemius (lateral epicondyle)
I- Calcaneus, via (just medial to) the Achilles tendon A- Plantar flexes of foot
8
POPLITEUS O- (Posterior) lateral condyle of femur
I- Posterior proximal tibia A- Medially rotates & flexes leg Can laterally rotate femur Helps unlock the knee
9
TIBIALIS POSTERIOR O- Posterior tibia, fibula
I- Tarsals & Metatarsals (2nd – 4th) A- Inverts & plantar flexes foot
10
FLEXOR DIGITORUM LONGUS
O- Inferior-posterior tibia I- Four outer phalanges (plantar surface) A- Plantar flexes and inverts the foot, flexes toes 2-5
11
FLEXOR DIGITORUM LONGUS
12
FLEXOR HALLUCIS LONGUS
O- Inferior-posterior fibula I- Plantar surface of big toe A- Plantar flexes & inverts foot, flexes big toe
13
Tibialis Posterior Flexor Digitorum Longus Flexor Hallucis Longus
14
ANTERIOR/LATERAL MUSCLES OF THE LEG
Tibialis anterior Extensor digitorum longus Extensor hallucis longus Lateral Peroneus Group (longus & brevis) Anterior Retinaculum: Secures (“retains”) insertion tendons
15
TIBIALIS ANTERIOR O- Proximal-lateral tibia
I- Medial tarsal (cuneiform), first metatarsal A- Dorsiflexes & inverts foot
16
TIBIALIS ANTERIOR
17
TIBIALIS ANTERIOR: Note insertion tendon
18
EXTENSOR DIGITORUM LONGUS
O- Lateral tibial condyle, fibula I- Dorsal surface of phalanges 2-5 A- Extends toes 2-5, dorsiflexes and everts foot
19
EXTENSOR DIGITORUM LONGUS
20
EXTENSOR DIGITORUM LONGUS: Note insertion tendons
21
EXTENSOR HALLUCIS LONGUS
O- Medial aspect of fibula I- Dorsal surface of big toe A- Dorsal flexes & inverts the foot, extends the big toe
22
PERONEUS Group O- Proximal/distal-lateral fibula
I-plantar surface of tarsals A- Plantar flexes & everts foot
23
PERONEUS
24
PERONEUS BREVIS O- Distal-lateral fibula I- Fifth metatarsal
A- Plantar flexes & everts foot
