1
Pink Dolphins in Hong Kong
Shannon Tse 8J
2
What are Pink Dolphins? Also known as the Chinese White Dolphin.
Called “Pink” Dolphin due to its pink skin colour Not identified as an endangered species but are living in a place full of dangers…
3
What kinds of threats do they face?
Sewage dropped into the sea Land reclamation / loss of home Over-fishing/getting caught in nets Collision with boats
4
Sewage About 450,000 cubic metres of raw, semi-processed sewage is dumped into the harbour every day. The rubbish that is dumped includes toxic and chemical waste which could harm the dolphins.
5
Land reclamation – loss of home
The home range of the dolphins has shrunk because of the construction of the Chek Lap Kok Airport, and 70% of it comes from land reclamation
6
Over-fishing/getting caught in nets
Many dolphins have been caught in fishing nets because they see the fish inside and think you can eat them. Over fishing reduces the amount of food and fish the dolphins eat.
7
Collision with boats Hong Kong is a busy harbour and there are many boats including illegal dolphin tours travelling across dolphins’ territory. Many dolphins have been found with propeller cuts
8
How can we help? We could help these dolphins by giving money to dolphin charity so they could build homes or protect them. We should not litter waste into the sea. Some of the things like land reclamation and boat collision, we can’t really help with that. Should not go on those illegal dolphin tour boats
