4 1. WHAT IS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE?  Global english in a socio linguistic context refers almost literally to the use of english as a global language

5 2.ENGLISH AS A GLOBAL LANGUAGE  Historically, English originated from the fusion of languages ​​ and dialects, now collectively called Old English, who were taken to the east coast of Britain by the settlers in the fifth century

6 3.ACCENTS AND DIALECTS  For over half a century, immigrants from the Indian subcontinent and the West Indies have added to the variety and diversity of the rich mosaic of accents and dialects spoken in the United Kingdom

7 4. English isn't suitable for an international language.  S ome people have the opinion that English isn't suitable for use as an international language. The reasons are, firstly, that English is a national language. They think no national language is suitable for international use. Why? Because if we accept a national language as international, that gives enormous political and cultural advantages to the country or countries for which the chosen language is the native tongue.

8 5. Why English is and should be an international language?  English is present on every continent. In over 60 countries it is used officially or without the sanction of government and is prominent in 20 more. Today about 400 million people speak English as their mother tongue or first language. Over 50 million children study English as an additional language at primary level and over 80 million study it at secondary level.

9 6. ROOTS OF ENGLISH AA significant number of English words are built on the Latin roots, as this was the lingua franca of the Christian Church and European intellectual life for centuries.

10 7. THE OLD NORSE  The English language was then the Old Norse influences due to the Viking invasions of Britain in the eighth and ninth centuries.

11 EEnglish as a global languageEnglish that arose in the Anglo-Saxon kingdoms of England and spread into what was to become south-east Scotland under the influence of the Anglian medieval kingdom of Northumbria. Following the economic, political, military, scientific, cultural, and colonial influence of Great Britain and the United Kingdom from the 18th century, via the British Empire, and of the United States since the mid-20th century, it has been widely dispersed around the world, become the leading language of international discourse, and has acquired use as lingua franca in many regions.
