2. What is a Debate? A debate is a formal ‘argument’ between two teams who disagree about an important issue or topic. There are TWO teams – each team has three (3) speakers. One team is the AFFIRMATIVE TEAM. They agree with the issue or topic. (and most things that the other team says!) The other is the NEGATIVE TEAM. They disagree with the issue or topic (and most things that the other team says!) Each team must try to persuade the audience that their team is RIGHT and the other team is WRONG!

3. Topic ( Also known as “The Moot” ) Affirmative Team (We agree with the topic) 3 speakers -First Affirmative -Second Affirmative -Third Affirmative Negative Team (We disagree with the topic) 3 speakers -First Negative -Second Negative -Third Negative

4. Groups Your groups of three have been preselected. Get into your groups as organised by your teacher 1.Decide who is the quiet but confident person in your group … you are first speaker. 2.Decide who is the loudest and most outspoken … you are the third speaker. 3.The person remaining is the solid second speaker!

Electricity – lights left on, computers, printers … Enviro Groups Bronze rating Recycle paper Is this enough? Can we do more? Litter? Noise? Visual? (where are our trees, gardens, compost heaps)

Team Line (Slogan) Your team needs to think up a short, clever, statement that sums up your team’s argument (or “case”) e.g. “We only have ONE world … and we need to protect it.” “Let’s leave the environment in good condition for the children of tomorrow.” “Recycling is not longer enough … we need to do more! SAY YOUR TEAM LINE AT THE BEGINNING AND END OF EACH SPEAKER’S TALK.

15. Now that your team has decided on your topic and what you want to speak about … You need to decide who is going to talk about what This is called the “Team Split” because you split the topic up for each speaker. …. And begin writing your speeches.

16. The Role of each Speaker (Handout) First Speaker must: Introduce the topic and slogan Introduce team and what each will talk about. Discuss/argue your first main point

17. The Role of each Speaker Second Speaker must: Rebutt/argue with /correct any comments that the opposition team has made that you disagree with. Summarise what your first speaker has said …. And Discuss your other main points.

18. The Role of each Speaker Third Speaker must: Rebutt/argue with/correct any comments that the opposition team has made that you disagree with. Lots and Lots and Lots of rebutting! Summarise your team’s “case” and convince everyone that YOUR team is right and the other team is wrong!

20. How to Speak in a Debate Use small palm cards (do NOT simply read them with your head down!) Use your voice to emphasise what you are saying. Use your hands to gesture. Look at the audience and the chairperson Talk loudly, clearly and use tone, pace and pause effectively. Convince us that you ARE right and that the other team IS definitely wrong!
