Anorexia Nervosa What is it? Restricting the amount of food you eat Exercising excessively Feeling overweight- often have body dysmorphia Often measure self worth by their weight Effects Heart and kidney problems Low blood iron Bone loss Digestive problems Low heart rate/blood pressure Fertility problems in women 10% of Canadians who suffer from anorexia die as a result of health problems or suicide

Statistics & Treatment Stats Affects between 0.3% and 1% of Canadian women 20-30% of sufferers attempt suicide In recent studies, 1 in 3 cases of anorexia is male 10% of suffers will die within 10 years of onset of anorexia Treatment Hospitalization Medication – usually antidepressants Individual or group therapy Cognitive therapy

Bulimia Nervosa What is it? Periods of uncontrolled binge-eating, followed by purging Excessive exercise Often have body dysmorphia Often at a normal body weight Effects Kidney problems Dehydration Digestive problems Vomiting damages a person’s teeth, mouth and throat

Statistics & Treatment Stats 1-3% of Canadian women will develop bulimia nervosa 20% of cases are male Treatment Same as anorexia nervosa

Binge-Eating Disorder What is it? Often occurs after dieting Excessive eating without the purging afterwards Many sufferers are obese May feel like they can’t control what they eat Feeling depressed, stressed or guilty after eating Attempt to keep it secret Fasting or dieting common Effects High blood pressure Type 2 Diabetes Obesity and associated risks

Statistics & Treatment Stats Sufferers are around 60% women and 40% men Around 5% of sufferers will die of health complications 5% of the general population will have BED Most common eating disorder in men Treatment Typically just counseling Sometimes antidepressants
