Lesson Goal and Essential Question Today we are taking a break from simple sentences to remember those who gave their lives on 9/11. Goal: Students will use effective discussion techniques AND understand the qualities of a hero. Question: What motivates heroes?

Remembering 9/11 In Lancaster they have a memorial tribute to those who fell on 9/11 and to those who have fallen after. As you watch this video, think about what it means for those firemen to carry the badges of fallen firemen. After the video: Do you have any reactions? Do you have any questions? Mrs. Thompson’s question: Why did these firemen go up the stairs while everyone else was going down? How did/does this impact us? What character trait could we give them based on their actions? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VatbZhnGkmc

Discussion Point(4 mins) Please add this definition to your notes: A character trait is a word used to describe a person/character based on what they do and/or say. Sometime it may be based off of how they see themselves (their thoughts). That is indirect characterization. Direct characterization is when a character trait is directly given by the author and/or stated in the text. Your task: Think of a character trait for these heroes based on what they did and/or said. Example: They are strong because they never turned back from the danger even as the building began to crumble. They kept going to save people as people ran by them to save themselves.
