2 Overview  Teen births are on the decline but remain an issue in the region.  Rates of sexual intercourse, STIs and repeat births remain high among adolescents  Teen mothers experience worse birth outcomes than their older counterparts

5 Sexually Transmitted Infections  Teen STI rates in NEFL are significantly higher than the state rates.  20-30 percent higher than the state  Duval County rates are the highest

8 Teen Births  Teen birth rates are on the decline across the board  NEFL closing the gap with state and national rates  Rates vary significantly in NEFL  Baker, Duval and Nassau counties have the highest rates  Secondary pregnancies remain high  Almost 17 percent of teen moms will give birth again before leaving their teens  Additional births multiply the difficulties experienced by teen mothers

13 Birth Outcomes  Teen mothers account for 7.6 percent of births in NEFL  They account for higher percentage of poor birth outcomes  Teen moms have a much higher rate of late or no prenatal care (care started in 2 nd trimester or later)  Higher rates of low or very low birth weight babies, preterm births
