4
Shutdown : Transport of used targets 4 From ISOLDE target area to storage area at CERN First intervention in the target area (to reduce the dose rate) Use of “Type A” container for the transport of 24 targets Average dose rate : 2.18 mSv/h @ 40 cm and 8.1 mSv/h max. Collective dose of 982 man. Sv for the whole operation Lessons learnt will be used for transport in 2012 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
5
Replacement of GPS FE#4 by FE#7 5 Replacement of GPS FE (HRS done in 2010) Very complex interventions involving several groups Collective dose: 7.6 man.mSv 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
6
Front End maintenance 6 Example : Replacement of extraction electrode Permanent improvement of processes following RP recommendations Example: development of new tool for extraction electrode replacement HRS FE#6 maintenance in 2011 : 3.7 man.mSv 1 Sv/h on contact (with emitters) + very high contamination 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011

8
Shielding efficiency assessment 8 Motivations: Linac4 injector for the PS Booster PS Booster energy from 1.4 GeV to 2 GeV HIE-ISOLDE project Can ISOLDE “digest” the energy and intensity increase ? Extensive radiation measurement campaign performed in 2010-2011 Shielding performances is one of many RP aspects to address ! 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
9
Original beam parameters for design… 907-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011 Design: 2.2 A @ 1.0 GeV = 2.2 kW Today : 2 A @ 1.4 GeV = 2.8 kW Future: 4 A @ 2.0 GeV = 8.0 kW ?
10
Measurement and shielding assessment 10 Measurements in accessible areas outside and inside the hall Normalization of measured dose rate to the beam intensity Use of 3D models to reconstruct shielding material thickness Measurement location Beam dump HRS 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011

FLUKA study for the new robots project 14 Current robots used for the target replacement arriving at the end of their lifetime New concept considered (AGV) FLUKA calculations needed to assess the robot exposure to radiations Two concepts have pros / cons 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
15
FLUKA studies : Example UCx on HRS 15 Dose rate calculations for recovery scenario Several Sv/h on contact with the target (after 72 h of decay) 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
16
Close view of the residual dose rate 16 High reliability or remote recovery needed as significant cooling time required before any human intervention 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
17
Robot exposure in parking position 17 Damage to electronic components in parking position (“currency” is the 1MeV neutron equivalent) Damage to organic component Relocate sensitive electronic outside 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011

Conclusions 19 Very busy year to support operation (FE exchange) Shielding assessment (thanks to extra RP resources available since 2 years) Baseline for shielding improvement studies Update of some areas classification Robot reliability critical considering the future intensity and energy upgrade (several issues with current system this year) for the availability of the facility Many challenges ahead of us (HIE-ISOLDE) How can you help us ? 07-DEC-2011ISOLDE Workshop and Users meeting 2011
