I am who God says I am Part 8 God says that I am … Redeemed
3
“In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God's grace that he lavished on us with all wisdom and understanding.” Eph 1:7
4
What does it mean to have been redeemed? “Redeem”: 1. to buy back, 2. to free from captivity by payment of ransom, 3. to release from blame or debt
5
In this story we see a beautiful picture of how God deals with us by looking at how Jonathan dealt with Mephibosheth. Jonathan is a picture of how God deals with us through Christ. Mephibosheth is a picture of you and me.
6
“Jonathan son of Saul had a son who was lame in both feet. He was five years old when the news about Saul and Jonathan came from Jezreel. His nurse picked him up and fled, but as she hurried to leave, he fell and became crippled. His name was Mephibosheth.” 2 Samuel 4:4
7
Mephibosheth means: “Scattered in Shame” Do we ever feel scattered or shameful?
8
I. I am Remembered by the King “David asked, Is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan's sake? Now there was a servant of Saul's household named Ziba…
9
They called him to appear before David, and the king said to him, Are you Ziba? "Your servant," he replied. The king asked, Is there no one still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show God's kindness?...
10
Ziba answered the king, There is still a son of Jonathan; he is crippled in both feet.” 2 Samuel 9:1-3
11
God has remembered me. “You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous man, though for a good man someone might possibly dare to die…
12
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:6-8
13
Ziba describes him as crippled. Sometimes we see ourselves primarily by our failures or limitations. God remembers us for who we are; Someone in need of his grace
14
II. I was Rescued by the King “Where is he? the king asked. Ziba answered, He is at the house of Makir son of Ammiel in Lo Debar. So King David had him brought from Lo Debar, from the house of Makir son of Ammiel…
15
When Mephibosheth son of Jonathan, the son of Saul, came to David, he bowed down to pay him honor. David said, Mephibosheth! Your servant," he replied.” 2 Samuel 9:4-6
16
Mephibosheth was living in a place called Lo Debar. The name literally means, NO THING. Mephibosheth was brought from nothing to the palace.
17
III. I was Restored by the King What exactly was restored or redeemed? a. Personhood
18
David restored Mephibosheth’s personally “Don't be afraid," David said to him, for I will surely show you kindness for the sake of your father Jonathan…” 7a
19
b. Property “I will restore to you all the land that belonged to your grandfather Saul…David gave him the land that belonged to Saul.” 7b
20
c. Presence “…and you will always eat at my table.” 7c
21
d. Power “Mephibosheth bowed down and said, What is your servant, that you should notice a dead dog like me? Then the king summoned Ziba, Saul's servant, and said to him, I have given your master's grandson everything that belonged to Saul and his family…
22
You and your sons and your servants are to farm the land for him and bring in the crops, so that your master's grandson may be provided for. And Mephibosheth, grandson of your master, will always eat at my table." (Now Ziba had fifteen sons and twenty servants.) 8-10
23
e. Position “Then Ziba said to the king, Your servant will do whatever my lord the king commands his servant to do. So Mephibosheth ate at David's table like one of the king's sons.” 11
24
God has restored me. “Yet to all who received him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. John 1:12
