1
What are Animal-like protists?
2
Animal-Like Protists Called Protozoas Single-celled Some parasites 4 Groups: amoebalike protists, flagellates, cilliates, & spore-forming protists
3
Ameobalike Protists Soft, jelly-like Found in fresh/salt water, soil, animals as parasites. contractile vacuoles Pseudopodia: false feet
4
Feeding Amoebas Engulf food 1.Senses food. 2.Surrounds bacteria or smaller protists with pseudopodia making a food vacuole.
5
Some parasitic amoebas live in human intestines and cause amebic dysentery (painful bleeding ulcers).
6
Protozoa with Shells Radiolarians Have an outer shell made of silica Foraminiferans Have snail-like shells made of calcium carbonate
7
Flagellates Have flagellums to move. Live in water. Some are parasites that cause dieases. Ex. Giardia Lamblia (diarrhea)
8
Some have symbiotic relationships. Ex. Live in guts of termites to digest wood.
9
Ciliates Have 100’s of hair-like structures called cilia. Cilia: move, help it get food, beat up to 60 x’s a second. Ex: Paramecium
11
Paramecium Have 2 Nucleus MacronucleusMicronucleus Large nucleus Controls the functions of the cell. Smaller nucleus Passes genetic material during reproduction
12
Protist Reproduction Asexually Offspring come from just 1 parent using fission Ex. Euglena and amoebas Sexually Offspring come from 2 parents. Ex. Paramecium use conjugation to make 4 total organisms!
13
Spore-Forming Protists Parasites Have 2 hosts. Ex. Plasmodium Vivax (Malaria)
15
Malaria has 2 hosts! The mosquito and you!
