Roots of Citizenship Citizenship gives people legal rights and allows them to take part in government. 2,500 years ago, being a citizen meant that you paid taxes and served in armed forces in exchange for participating in the Greek or Roman government. In the 1700’s, “citizenship” changed to belonging to a nation and that the people give the power to the government. Not all people were accepted as full citizens from the creation of the United States, but it was gradually given out through equal rights movements, suffrage and various citizenship acts.

Natural-Born Citizens – Any person born in the United States’ 50 states or Washington D.C. automatically becomes a citizen. This same rule also applies to American territories and military bases. – A person in another country can obtain citizenship in two cases. Their parents must both be U.S. citizens or if one parent is a citizen who has lived in the U.S.

Naturalized Citizens -Naturalization is a legal process to obtain citizenship. Immigrants who want to become United States citizens must meet certain requirements. -Must be 18 or older -Must have been a lawful permanent resident for 5 years -Must read, write, and speak English -Have good moral character -Show an understanding of U.S. civics. -The applicant must complete an application, participate in an interview, and pass an exam.

Losing Citizenship You can lose your citizenship in 3 ways: 1.Expatriation: Someone who gives his or her allegiance to a foreign country 2.Denaturalization: Naturalized citizens who are found to have lied on their citizenship application 3.Being convicted of certain crimes: If you are found guilty of treason, rebellion, or overthrowing the government violently.

Legal & Illegal Citizens -A resident alien is a legal immigrant who permanently lives in the United States. -A nonresident alien is someone who expects to stay in the U.S. for a short period of time. -Legal aliens pay taxes, have jobs, and go to schools. They do not have the same rights as citizens though. -Illegal aliens do not come into the use legally and do not have the same rights as legal aliens.

Refugees The United States accepts some people who are refugees. Refugees are running from their country to escape danger. The government grants this status to people only if they can prove that they really are in danger if they return to their homeland.
