SYMBOLS Something that represents something else by association, resemblance, or convention, especially a material object used to represent something invisible.

EXAMPLES OF SYMBOLISM Water as baptism, rebirth Sunrise as a new beginning A dove as peace

METAPHORS a figure of speech in which a term or phrase is applied to something to which it is not literally applicable in order to suggest a resemblance Metaphors are not symbols Similes- a kind of metaphor

AUTHOR’S INTENT Themes and metaphors form a pattern take in context with plot Look at the author

CONCLUSION Literature has a message from the author called theme. Symbols and metaphors are used to show this message.
