4 Importance of Health Coverage December 2004 Uninsured Americans are four times more likely to require avoidable hospitalizations and emergency hospital care Uninsured women receive fewer prenatal services Uninsured newborns are more likely to have a low birthweight or to die

5 Importance of Health Coverage December 2004 Uninsured children are 70% more likely not to receive care for common conditions like ear infections Uninsured children are 30% less likely to receive medical attention for injuries

6 The Uninsured December 2004 8.7 million uninsured children under age 18 are in America (up 11.7% in 2006) Children in poverty are more likely to be uninsured then the population of all children in 2006 (19.3%) Midwest has the lowest uninsured rate at 11.4%

7 Importance of Health Coverage December 2004 The movement began in 1970 2004-05 census identified more than 1709 school-connected centers nationally SHC’s adapt to meet the age appropriate needs of students with unique services to that school and community Through prevention, early detection and treatment of health problems, absenteeism is reduced School Health Programs

8 December 2004 80% of programs serve at least one grade of adolescents 41% are designated as Title One schools 6% are in alternative schools 42% are in schools with more than 1000 students
