5 Mission Statement u The American Red Cross, a humanitarian organization led by volunteers and guided by its Congressional Charter and the Fundamental Principles of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement, will provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies.

7 Disaster Action Teams (DAT) u Respond to local disaster incidents u Serve with a team of dedicated volunteers u “On-call” schedule (chapter and local service area specific) u Disaster Generalist

11 Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR) System u Groups u Activities The American Red Cross uses the DSHR system to manage disaster-related human resource needs. Two key terms:

13 DSHR Groups u The DSHR system is organized into eight groups. u Each group is defined by the activities it conducts on a disaster relief operation.

14 Activities u Activities are the main actions conducted within each group. u For example, the activities within the Information Management Support Services group are: n Disaster Assessment (DA) n Financial & Statistical Information Management (FSI) n Information Dissemination (ID) n Analysis & Planning (AP)

15 DSHR Members u Position level depend on proficiency in task. u Trained and specialized in specific activity u Typical deployment for 2 – 3 weeks u Respond to medium or large disasters (chapter, regional, or national)
