USING IPTV Internet Protocol Television in the language classroom

IPTV – what is it? “Connected learning” – a closed system; very protected; very difficult to export Social media for the classroom – record, edit, re-record, post, view – very easy, with or without a teacher Only designated staff can ‘publish’ for al users; all users can “save as draft for their log-in only

IPTV – what do you need? A computer A webcam The software (ours is from Cisco) Optional, but very desirable, a DVP

IPTV – why use it? (1) It is instant, so feedback is instantaneous Editing is very simple It’s motivating – much more so than sound only (more engaging, shows body language, facial expression etc) Good for pron – shows lip positions, tongue in tree/three etc

IPTV – why use it? (2) It overcomes shyness (a shy student can be left alone with a webcam; when the class views it, it is a shock at first but soon gives confidence) It replicates real-world social media and internet communication It gives the student independence and encourages self-correction

IPTV – How to use it? (1) Record LOs for moderation Practice for LOs Feedback on LOs Post models, benchmarks, texts, podcasts, oral presentations, discussions – all without copyright issues
