Please Copy Into Your Notes... ► Recite and present an original Native American oral tradition. ► Identify examples of internal and external conflicts. ► Compare and contrast traditions within cultures.

Oral Tradition Assignment... ► You will have about 45 minutes or so to work in your groups to prepare the Oral Tradition. ► Remember you need to prepare at LEAST a one page written document as well as a brief presentation.

Before We Begin... ► Think of the different regions in this country (i.e. North, South, East, West). ► Note any differences in lifestyle and culture among these regions.

“The Man To Send Rain Clouds” ► Based on the title of our final Native American piece, what do you think this story will accomplish in the oral tradition legacy?

Leslie Marmon Silko ► Silko is a contemporary Native American writer who honors the oral tradition yet does so with a modern setting. ► She is a member of the Laguna Pueblo Indians who continue to express traditional rituals and ceremonies. ► The Laguna Pueblo honor the dead as “Cloud People” or those who bring the precious gift of rain.

“The Man To Send Rain Clouds” ► In a group of 3, answer questions #1,2,3,5 on page 53. ► Have a roundtable discussion about the types of conflict in the story. Write down examples of internal and external conflicts that occur in the story. ► List 5 specific traditions that occur in your society/culture. (Use #7 on p.53 as an example.) ► Please turn in when complete – with all group members’ names at the top.

Thoughts to Consider... ► Why is rain/water so important to the Native American culture? ► Is there anything similar that Americans value? ► Why was Teofilo’s family adamant about giving him a Laguna Pueblo burial? ► Are there any specific traditions consistent with your culture’s funeral ceremonies?
