2  How did you feel your first day on the job?  First impressions are everything  Where do I fit in?  Invest the time  Expectation Sheet  Do they understand their duties?  Scavenger hunt training exercise  Survey training exercise  Training games ORIENTATION & TRAINING

3  Great, your new student is trained, now you can kick back and relax, nope!  Ask questions  Check their work  Training Checklist  Performance Reviews (student evaluation by supervisor, self evaluation by student, supervisor evaluation by student)—yes, regular, scheduled performance reviews FOLLOW UP

4  Acknowledge successes immediately  Coach them on improvements immediately  Be specific when coaching or taking corrective action measures  Use the term “we”  Give them attainable goals and the tools to get there  Keep students informed of things going on in your division  Make students part of the decision making process COMMUNICATION

5  No money? What else is there?  Cyber Café gift card or other free to inexpensive reward  Interesting and new tasks  Assisting in training new co-workers  Create teams to work together on special projects  “Promotion” to new job title and duties  Outstanding Student Assistant Award  Student Assistant Appreciation Week  “Thank you,” “Great work on project X!”  Other resume boosters? RECOGNITION & REWARDS

6  Remember the supervisors you liked? Be that kind of supervisor!  Be consistent  Be a mentor  Have staff meetings F2F or online  Take the time to get to know your students  Recognize birthdays or the completion of a large project  Stay motivated or get motivated!  Buy into the company mission  Negative attitudes are contagious  Morale ENVIRONMENT

7  What motivates you? Job security? Interesting work? Achieving goals?  Let’s make a plan for our department/division based on those motivators… PAIR AND SHARE ACTIVITY
