Author’s Purpose To inform To persuade To entertain To motivate

Audience It is critical to take into account audience when writing nonfiction because the piece of work must be appropriate for the particular audience.

Tone The tone of nonfiction is one of the following: Positive-the author feels positive about his or her subject Neutral-the piece may be factual or the author may not feel either way about his or her subject Negative-the author feels negatively about his or her subject

Types of nonfiction Autobiography -the account of a person’s life written by that person -embarrassing events may be colored over or left out completely -the diary is the most honest type of auto biography

Biography The account of a person’s life written by someone else The key components are completeness honesty. Sources for biographies include interviews, documents, etc…

Interview The interview is based on questions that you ask someone and will probably include quotations.

Journal A journal is a periodical account of something. A diary is a type of journal, but many occupations keep journals.

Article An article is a short piece of writing intended to inform or persuade.

Essay Essays are pieces of nonfiction intended to motivate, inform, entertain, or persuade.
