2 Author’s Purpose  To inform  To persuade  To entertain  To motivate

3 Audience  It is critical to take into account audience when writing nonfiction because the piece of work must be appropriate for the particular audience.

4 Tone  The tone of nonfiction is one of the following: Positive-the author feels positive about his or her subject Neutral-the piece may be factual or the author may not feel either way about his or her subject Negative-the author feels negatively about his or her subject

5 Types of nonfiction Autobiography -the account of a person’s life written by that person -embarrassing events may be colored over or left out completely -the diary is the most honest type of auto biography

6 Biography  The account of a person’s life written by someone else  The key components are completeness honesty.  Sources for biographies include interviews, documents, etc…

7 Interview  The interview is based on questions that you ask someone and will probably include quotations.

8 Journal  A journal is a periodical account of something.  A diary is a type of journal, but many occupations keep journals.

9 Article  An article is a short piece of writing intended to inform or persuade.

10 Essay  Essays are pieces of nonfiction intended to motivate, inform, entertain, or persuade.
