'Must-Have' Technology: Interactive Whiteboard
2
What is an interactive whiteboard?...is a touch-sensitive screen that works in conjunction with a computer and a projector. The first interactive whiteboard was manufactured by SMART Technologies Inc. in 1991.
3
IWB effect on learning raise the level of student engagement in a classroom; motivate students; promote enthusiasm for learning; support many different learning styles and are used in a variety of learning environments (disabled peolple).
5
Benefits of using IWB for students Get students communicating and interacting; Allow learners to participate in group discussions by freeing them from note-taking; Allow learners to work collaboratively around a shared task or work area; Suit a variety of learning styles; Motivate and engage students; Increase attention span and improve focus; Allow learners to absorb information more easily; Facilitate knowledge retention.
6
Benefits of using IWB for teachers Reduce preparation time; Give freedom and flexibility in preparing the materials; Motivate teachers to try out new approaches and inspire them to innovate their teaching; Broaden the use of e-learning; Make easy to enhance presentation content by easily integrating a wide range of material into a lesson; Allow teachers to create easily and rapidly customised learning objects and to adapt it to the needs of the class in real time; Reinvigorate teachers who see how their students are enthusiastic and motivated.
7
Benefits of using IWB for classroom interaction It’s fun for all ages. IWBs offer versatile teaching that caters to all learning styles. Clean and hassle-free. Help change classroom dynamics; Introduce the fun and games element; Move the classes towards a student-centred approach; Can be used for interactive testing of understanding for the entire class, rapidly provided feedback.
8
What are the disadvantages? Price; Surface can become damaged; Front projection boards can be obscured by one or more users; Fixed-height boards; Difficult to secure and realign free-standing boards; Inputs can get jumbled; Disruptive comments or drawings to the screen.
9
New opportunities for people with special needs Visual learners benefit from notes taken on the interactive whiteboard in addition to diagramming and manipulating objects or symbols. Kinesthetic or tactile learners are able to reinforce learning through exercises involving touch, movement and space on an interactive whiteboard. Deaf and hearing-impaired learners rely primarily on visual learning with the use of sign language simultaneously in front of students. Visually impaired students with some vision ability can manipulate objects and use large text on an interactive whiteboard’s big surface. Other special needs students.
10
Interactive Whiteboard Tips Practice makes perfect; Avoid using white backgrounds; Think about classroom position; Remember the activities need to be interactive; Make sure your classroom set-up allows access to the board.; Don't allow the IWB to dominate lessons; Don't make IWB material too complicated; Think about different learning styles when designing material; Don't make materials too complete; Don't let the IWB do all the work; „Freeze“ Button; Give students the ability to interact with the subject matter; Save their work; Use voting technology.
