1 Ms. Herl 7 th Grade Washington State History and Ancient World History Classroom Routines

2 How do I get permission to leave the room? Your planner is your ticket to leaving the room. It must be filled out before you gain a signature from Ms. Herl. If you wish to go to the office, another teachers room, or for any reason to leave the room, your planner must be signed and ok’d by the teacher. In no way, should you interrupt the teaching or learning taking place in the classroom when you are asking permission to leave the room.

3 Calls to Attention Teacher/Speaker raises hand Students/audience raise hand, cease activity and talk, eyes and attention on teacher/speaker Teacher/speaker counts from 54321, followed by the phrase “eyes on me” Students/audience gradually quiet and cease activity, get quiet, and at count of 1, attention/eyes on teacher/speaker waiting for instructions Teacher sets a timer or bell When the timer or bell rings, students/audience quiet and cease activity, attention/eyes on teacher/speaker waiting for instructions

4 Community Students Application Needed Community Students Role of a Community Student:  Remind Ms. Herl to end class 10 minutes before the bell for exit questions/and/or thorns and roses.  Add/Erase from planner board  Pass back graded papers at appropriate work times  Add/Change monthly calendar  Run errands  Collect/Pass out items  Add Learning Targets to the monthly calendar Rights of a Community Student  To pass at the role of community student  To enjoy the responsibility Note: The role of community student is a privilege and not a right. One must EARN this role.

5 First Five Minutes of Class........ Students will: Copy into their planners the brief AGENDA and possible homework for the day from the front whiteboard. If needed, check the MONTHLY AGENDA?PLANNER BOARD in the front of the room for any assignments he/she may have missed due to absence, lost memory, or a temporary brain freeze. If any materials were passed out (worksheets, handouts, etc.), they will be filed on the bookshelf where students turned in their homework by the day of the week. Turn in homework unless Ms. Herl has instructed otherwise Individually, tackle a daily entry task or “ET” to the best of their ability. The “ET” will always be located on the front whiteboard or displayed on the overhead projector. Entry Tasks may be quizzes, practice, journal writes, etc. They will often been written in your History Notebook Binder. One student from each group of tables will grab books and binders (if needed) for the table.

6 Classroom Tour #1 Cabinet (next to front door) contains student and teacher materials. The doors are labeled: white paper, large map paper, colored pencils, colored paper, etc. Homeroom portfolios and pass back papers box Graphic Organizers, Learning Targets, and Word Wall Posters. Notable Individuals of History: If you have someone to add, lets talk Maps, Maps and more maps STUDENT CENTER – lunch schedules, school bell schedule, student stapler, whole-puncher,files for handouts and worksheets handed out during the week, maps of school, and copies of teacher expectations brochure and Silver Team Handbook. On the cream-colored book shelf, students can find dictionaries, thesaurus, and literature books.

7 Classroom Tour #2 Teacher desk: late/absent work turn in box is located on the small desk beside my desk. Students must write the words LATE WORK or ABSENT on the top of the turned in materials. EX: Absent 2 days, 2 days to make up the work.

8 Classroom Tour #3 Front White Board: Agenda/Planner/Homework list. Every word written on this part of the board MUST be written in your planner. You can abbreviate words but do not leave anything out. Above the front whiteboard, an example of how to head your paper – Name, date and period on right hand side and assignment on left hand side. Whiteboard continued: Entry Task instructions/these will be very specific and instruct students on what they need to work on or complete in the first 5 to 20 minutes of class. The entry task could be: a reading, a handout, a review, a quiz, etc. It often reviews/assesses the previous days homework

9 Classroom Tour #4 Next to the front door of classroom, Monthly Agenda and Planner Board. Anything written on the Daily Planner and Agenda will be copied to this monthly calendar. The information will not be erased until the end of the month. Homework turn in baskets Class set of textbooks The class/school wide expectation: No one has the right to interfere with the education, safety or well-being of anyone.

10 Quiz on Classroom Expectations, Classroom Routines, and the Classroom Tour Where do you turn in your homework? When or do you know when to turn in your homework? Where are the colored pencils kept? When you are absent, what steps do you take to retrieve missing work? What supplies do you need to possess in order to be successful in 7 th grade History? Why do you need a red pen? Where is the map of the school located? What tasks do you have to complete in order to ask permission to go to the bathroom?

11 Quiz continued When should students write down homework, do the entry task, and grab books for class? Who is responsible for taking care of the materials in the cabinet or student center, replacing any lost or used ones, and making sure it is returned everyday in a neat manner? What is the school rule? Where do you turn in late or absent work? If Ms. Herl counts down from 5 to 1, what reactions should the students have? What times of topics will we be studying in this class? QUESTIONS???????????????????????????????????
