Algebra II Honors—Day 15
2
Goals for Today Pick up a whiteboard, marker, and pen Show me your homework for a homework stamp (Radicals and Rational Exponents sheet) Second Graded Homework Assignment—due today. Warmup Essential Questions Homework
3
Warmup on whiteboard Simplify the following:
4
Essential Questions How do add, subtract, and multiply polynomials?
5
Vocabulary Monomial—a number, a variable, or the product of numbers and variables—there can be no variables in the denominator and no negative or rational exponents Like Terms—monomials that have the same variables raised to the same powers— coefficients might be different, but the variables are identical
6
Vocabulary Polynomial—a monomial or the sum (or difference) of monomials Binomial—a polynomial with two UNLIKE terms Trinomial—a polynomial with three UNLIKE terms
7
Vocabulary Degree of a polynomial—the highest degree of any term in the polynomial—you do not add up the degrees of all the separate terms!!! Examples Degree is 6 Degree is 2 Degree is 0
8
EXAMPLES Monomials NOT monomials Polynomials – All of the monomials – Binomials – Trinomials NOT polynomials
9
Adding and Subtracting Polynomials Adding Polynomials – Group like terms and add the coefficients. – Variable exponents DO NOT CHANGE Subtracting Polynomials Distribute the minus sign, group like terms, and then add
10
Multiplying Polynomials Monomial times polynomial – Distribute and use exponent rules for variables Binomial times binomial – Use FOIL or Box method or Distributive Property Polynomial times polynomial – Use Box method or Distributive Property
11
Practice problems Work out on whiteboard one at a time Write large enough for me to see from a distance When I’ve confirmed that you have one correct, do the next one
12
Homework Handouts – Adding and Subtracting Polynomials – Box method problems
