* In table groups: for each of the following, decide if it is an element or a molecule: carbon, carbon dioxide, water, sugar (glucose), diamonds, hydrogen, ammonia (NH3), potassium, proteins, oxygen * Place each into a table (see below) on the whiteboard. Instructions: * If GREEN… write it down!

* All organisms needs nitrogen to build proteins. * There is a large amount of nitrogen (N 2 ) in the air, but most organisms cannot use it directly. * Certain types of bacteria can take N 2 out of the air change it into Ammonia (NH 3 ) in the soil (or water) = nitrogen fixation. * Large amounts of nitrogen- fixing bacteria live in the roots of plants called legumes (peanuts, beans, etc.)
6
* From there other… plants/producers can then uptake the nitrogen from the soil/water
7
Denitrification: Another set of bacteria (denitrifying bacteria) return nitrogen to the air Nitrogen in proteins

* Watch the video clip while thinking about 2 questions: 1. What is going wrong in this ecosystem? 2. What is causing this issue? As you watch, write down brief notes that we can use to answer the questions.

* Fish are getting sick (bacteria infections( * There are too many nutrients (nitrogen) in the Bay * The bay has large algae blooms * People are using more fertilizer (lawns, gardens, etc) * The deep areas of the bay doesn’t have enough O 2 for the fish * Fish must spend more time in the warmer waters = stress * Greater population in Chesapeake bay area
