THANKSGIVING DAY

Thanksgiving Day is a national holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November in the United States and on the second Monday of October in Canada. It is a day when people express gratitude to God, family and friends. In 1620 the pilgrims, trying to make a better life for themselves came to America on the boat “The Mayflower”. They settled and found that weather conditions were harsh. Without the help of the Indians, all would have died. After a very hard first year, the fall harvest was rich.

The governor William Bradford decided to proclaim a day of Thanksgiving. On Thanksgiving day the Pilgrims invited Indians to gave them a lot of thanks. In the 1920’s New York decided to have a parade to celebrate the holiday. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln make Thanksgiving day a national holiday.

One of the best things about Thanksgiving is spending time with family. Many people travel long distances by car or plane to be with their relatives. On that day they go to church, eat traditional food, play board or card games, watch parade on TV. Many folks use Thanksgiving as an opportunity to help homeless.

Thanksgiving Dinner Thanksgiving day is sometimes called “turkey day”, because turkey is the main dish. Some people eat vegetarian turkey, which is made out of tofu. Traditional foods are stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes, cornbread, mashed potatoes, and cranberry sauce. Many people serve pie for dessert at the end of the meal.

Thanksgiving Parade Thanksgiving Parade attracts millions of people. It includes marching bands, songs and performances from Broadway musicals and giant helium-filled balloons.
