2 THE LUTE (CIRCA 1600) … Observe the position of the fingers on the frets (left hand) Do you think that this instrument is easier to play:  By reading conventional musical notation?  Or by reading the position of the fingers on the frets?

3 LUTE TABLATURE Essentially, a way of representing finger positions on the frets to play the music

4 THE MODERN MUSICAL NOTATION CAN BE OBTAINED BY TRANSLATION Modern notation Tablature notation

5 THE NOTATION CAN ALSO BE TRANSLATED DIRECTLY INTO SOUND!

7 CHALLENGES AND PREREQUISITES Prerequisite:  Basic knowledge of ‘normal’ musical notation Information on what has already been done:  http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~bernard/luth.html http://www.site.uottawa.ca/~bernard/luth.html To be done:  Translation of existing files and programs:  DOS  Windows  Basic or C++ to Java  Use of various tools and programs :  Midi, mp3, XML etc.
